The John Adams High School Band Department has a rich history of music, performing both for the community and in competitions. For years, the Band Department has offered Concert Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band, and Pep Band. In the past, some students have also participated in Winter Percussion and Winter Guard.

When the school was founded in 1940, the Concert Band originally began as one ensemble. For many years, this ensemble participated in the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Organization Festival and has sent students to perform at both ISSMA District and State Solo and Ensemble. The Concert Band will also be performing at the Indiana Music Education Association (IMEA) Festival and Clinic this year.

Since its inception in the mid-1990s, the Jazz Band has hosted an annual event called, Big Band Bash. Originally a dance for John Adams students and alumni, it has developed into one of the largest fundraising events for the band program. One jazz band cultivated into two and jazz ensembles from surrounding schools in the corporation began performing. In addition to Big Band Bash, the Jazz Band also performs in an annual event presented by many of the jazz ensembles in the school district called, Jazz Soundsations. The Jazz Band also traveled to New York for special performances over Spring Break and participated in many jazz festivals hosted by universities, including Purdue, Ball State, and Western Michigan.

In 1996 and 2006-2010, the Marching Band performed in the ISSMA Open Class Regionals competition. During this time, the band earned a gold rating with a score of 70.85, the highest in the South Bend history. The Marching Band also took multiple trips to Florida in the 1990s to perform at the Walt Disney World of Magic Music Days. Transitioning into Pep Band season in 2018-2019, the students had the opportunity to perform at the University of Notre Dame for two Women’s Basketball games.
